Vehicle Access:
You do need a 4 wheel drive vehicle to travel along the beaches of K'gari. Seventy-Five Mile Beach is a sand highway that runs up the surf side of the island. Sand tracks crisscross the island taking you to some of the best natural attractions K'gari has to offer.
If you do not have your own 4 wheel drive vehicle, hiring a vehicle is an option. There are many reputable companies from Brisbane to Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay to assist you with your hire requirements.
Barge Fees:
Barges run regularly from River Heads (Fraser Island Barge) or Inskip Point (Manta Ray Barge) across to K'gari. Barge fees apply and are dependent upon where you access the barge and if you are towing. Tickets must be purchased prior to arrival to the barge.
Road Rules:
Driving conditions vary with weather and tides. Speed limits apply both inland and on the beach. Normal road rules apply. Carry essential spares as well as a towrope, spade, water and first aid kit.
Vehicle Permits:
You do require a vehicle permit to allow you to drive on K'gari. You can call 13 74 68 (24hrs); visit a Queensland Parks and Wildlife (QPWS) Information Centre at Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay; or alternatively you can purchase a permit online from QPWS. Visit: https://qpws.usedirect.com/qpws/
